Tiny lessons from a text message

Living Unmuted Insider

Real stories. Real advice.

Hey beautiful friend,

I used to get completely thrown when someone didn’t respond to a text.

The silence would hit and my mind would sprint in every direction.

They don’t care
They’re upset
I annoyed them
I embarrassed myself
I shouldn’t have reached out

All of that from one quiet screen.

I remember sending a simple message once
I’m sorry about last night
and the lack of response pulled me into a spiral before I even realized it.

Maybe I should have called.
Maybe I should have stayed distant.
Maybe something is wrong with me.

It’s wild how quickly the mind can turn a tiny pause into a story about our worth.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me back then
Most of what you feel in that moment isn’t about the text at all.
It’s about old emotional patterns filling in the silence with what they learned to expect.

There’s a small practice that helped me interrupt the spiral

When you feel the panic rising, pause and ask yourself
What am I afraid this silence means about me?

Not about them.
About me.

Usually the answer is something tender
I’m afraid I’m a burden
I’m afraid I said the wrong thing
I’m afraid I’m too much or not enough

Once you name that truth, the storm softens.
Because now you’re not fighting the message.
You’re tending to the part of you that needed reassurance long before this conversation ever happened.

And here’s the real lesson
A text message has no response requirement.
Silence is not a verdict.
People get busy. They forget. They respond later. Life happens.

You are allowed to interpret the pause with kindness instead of fear.

If you ever find yourself spiraling over a tiny gap between messages, remember
you don’t have to fill the silence with the harshest story.
You can choose a gentler one.
You can choose yourself.

With you
Kimberlie
